The overarching goal of Klimakommune.digital is to equip the city of Hagen with a comprehensive range of digital sensors. These continuously record data from the areas of transport, buildings and industry. In the building sector, for example, an important component is the replacement of conventional electricity meters with intelligent measuring systems with smart meter gateways (SMGW), and the use of digital meters for gas, water and heat to enable more efficient data collection and evaluation. The use of digital sensor technology and software in Hagen should make it possible to precisely record, analyse and transparently present energy consumption and CO2 emissions. On this basis, measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce climate-damaging emissions are to be derived.

However, prevention alone is no longer enough due to the consequences of climate change that are already emerging. We also need to adapt to the consequences of climate change. The city of Hagen learnt this painfully after the floods in summer 2021. One of the aims of the project is therefore to detect forest fires more quickly with the help of an air quality-based forest fire detection system, allowing emergency services to take action earlier.

But how do you analyse, interpret and visualise all this data from such different areas and prepare it for the right target group? Two central processes are responsible for this in the Klimakommune.digital project. Firstly, the implementation of a comprehensive energy management system. This system records and analyses energy consumption in industry and buildings in real time, allowing optimisation potential to be identified and exploited. In addition, the collected data is collated in an Urban Data Platform (UDP) and presented to the public. This platform therefore serves as a central tool for analysing, interpreting, visualising and providing the data.
